Why You Should Not Share a Vape Device
Handing your device to someone else is one of those things nobody thinks twice about until they do. It is worth thinking about once, because a mouthpiece is not a neutral object — it is something you have had in your mouth all day.
Nicotine is an addictive substance. These products are sold to adults aged 18 and over only.
What is actually being shared
A drip tip or pod mouthpiece collects saliva with every draw. Warm, damp and enclosed, it is not a surface that stays clean on its own. Passing the device passes that along with it.
The same applies in reverse. You are also taking on whatever is on the device coming back to you.
This is ordinary hygiene rather than anything dramatic — the same reason you would not share a toothbrush or finish someone else's drink.
The practical problems beyond hygiene
Strength mismatch. If you run 20mg salt nicotine and hand it to someone used to 3mg freebase, they will get far more nicotine than they expect in a single draw. The result is usually a coughing fit, sometimes nausea. It is an unpleasant thing to do to someone.
Draw mismatch. A device set up for a tight mouth-to-lung pull behaves very differently for someone expecting an open, direct-to-lung draw, and vice versa. Neither person enjoys it.
Damage. Dropped devices are almost always dropped by the person who does not own them. Pods crack, glass tanks break, and 510 threads get cross-threaded by someone unfamiliar with the device.
Cleaning a mouthpiece properly
Whether or not you share, mouthpieces should be cleaned regularly. Flavour dulls noticeably when residue builds up in the airway.
- Remove the drip tip or mouthpiece if the device allows it. Most 510 drip tips pull straight out.
- Rinse under warm water. Not hot — heat can distort plastic and perish silicone seals.
- Clear the inside. A cotton bud reaches the residue a rinse alone leaves behind.
- Dry completely before refitting. Water left in the airway will end up in your next draw.
Integrated mouthpieces that cannot be removed — most disposables and many pods — can be wiped with a dry cloth. Do not run water into a pod you cannot dismantle.
If you are going to hand it over anyway
Keep a spare drip tip. They are inexpensive, universal on 510 fittings, and swapping one takes a second. It solves the hygiene problem completely and costs almost nothing.

Keeping a device clean day to day
Do not leave it loose in a bag or pocket. Lint finds airflow slots and mouthpieces immediately.
Wipe the contact points. E-liquid that has seeped onto the 510 connection or pod contacts causes poor connection and misfires as much as it causes mess.
Store it upright. A pod on its side in a warm car is the usual explanation for a leak, and a leaked device is a device that needs cleaning.
